Often the most content people we meet live (or have spent a large proportion of time) in countries where the infrastructure is what we might call 'unstable', or brand as a 'weak economy'. Conversely, local relationships in these environments are some of the strongest and most reliable we might encounter. Perhaps uncertainty regarding the future leads to a heightened focus on what is happening today; the people around you, the land and the pleasures currently available.
On the Cycladic island of Naxos, the land is very much a part of the people; they are not divisible. Each of the following mens' portraits convey the individual's character in alliance with their surrounding land, rather than in opposition to it. The final portrait depicts Alex, a prologue for the next generation, who has chosen to return to the countryside and tend to the land of his family, instead of pursuing a life in the city of Athens after graduating University.
